Went to Vail to ski for the weekend, I was easily the smallest thing on the roads. Dad and I did a little census, and figured that less than 5% of vehicles on the road were cars, the remainder being SUVs of some sort. They felt like overkill. And adding validty to the debate of 4wd with all seasons vs. fwd with snows, I passed so many larger vehicles struggling to stay on the road of go up inclines.

Lotsa filth!

Kinja'd!!!

why bother? My brother and sister in law got me free tickets (coz who can afford Vail’s $160/day ticket!?) and they got over 6 inches of fresh stuff. Roll out of the in-laws luxury hotel, walk a few hundred feet and...

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

join a pre-opening lift line a thousand people strong

The return drive home was slowwwwwww. Metering at the Eisenhower Tunnel (technically the Johnson as I was headed East) meant the traffic was backed up for miles. I have now used all my first gear driving allotment for the next 3 years.

don’t forget folks, the roads are slippery, strap in your loved ones.

It is pretty absurd how large so many of the vehicles you find at the ski mountains. Bringing my Miata there is a ton more efficient with just two people, skis, boots, and clothing for the weekend. But a Civic sized vehicle is perfect for 3-4 if you have a roof rack for the skiis. Seeing all the gigantic SUVs is always silly.

But those lines!! That is crazy. I consider waiting 5 minutes to be a REALLY long time for a ski lift. This is why I try to go weekdays as much as possible. Plus always go into the singles line, even when with other people. We just split up and meet at the top. I cannot imagine waiting for 1000 other people...

Damn those lift lines, if I have to wait more than 5 minutes I get pissed.

Yeah, I don’t ski or board, but can understand the allure. That line is ridiculous though. No way I would wait in that line unless it takes you like 2 hours to get to the bottom of the slope.

fortunately, Vail is a wide mountain, once you get up from the gondola there are a ton of lifts to go on, so the lines the rest of the day were fine.

I’m thinking next Sunday, superbowl, would be an epic time to hit the slopes!

Was the snow good? I heard the mountains just got some snow...Are those Santiago’s breakfast burrito’s? They would be in my case.

Driving down some parts of I-70 near ski resorts in a blizzard has to be among my most hated driving situations. Its usually on the return trip too.

I’m always surounded by large SUV’s crab-walking, sliding everywhere yet pushing traffic to go 60mph+ as if there’s no consequence to tailgating (me) with 6-8 inches of uncleared snow on the highway with a gasoline tanker infront of me, also crabbing.

Don’t lie, you know you drove that Hummer to Vail. Also, $160 would be a discount, Vail is $175/day now.

snow was amazing. they’d had 15 inches the week before, and got 6+ that night. the tree runs were like a drug

You have a great idea for sure! If I hadn’t just skied 7 days in the last 10 days, I would definitely be trekking back up to Vermont again for that very reason. Skiing down in NJ is not exactly worthwhile.

That is expensive! I paid $350 for a season pass at my mountain. And it is not a small place. But I could certainly use more of that snow they are getting out west.

Tree runs with a bunch of powder are the best. So much of it is just completely untouched and you get to be the first one to ski through that section. Sometimes you end up buried face-first in a few feet of powder but it is just so much fun to explore woods areas and create your own trail.

I did come out of the trees on one run to find myself confronted by a completely flat field of untouched powder. I came to a slow halt and sank. Exhaustion ensued as I dug my way sideways to get out

Well you can buy a season pass there too for less than $600. For that you get full access to Vail and Beaver Creek for 10 days and all the Keystone, Breckenridge and A-Basin you can handle, plus a couple out of state mountains as well. The $175 is basically a tourist/stupid local tax.

I came through there Saturday while it was snowing. I just wanted to tell people to put their cars in D2 and maybe they would make it up the mountain. When I finally got to the tunnel a semi was spinning his unchained tires and blocking three lanes

YES! and for downhill, so many auto drivers dont use their gears, just ride their brakes and start slipping
